A powerful celebration of creativity, connection and womanhood took place at Y Muni in Pontypridd on Friday 10 July, as participants from the Metamorphosis project came together to share the outcomes of their creative journey.

Funded by The National Lottery Awards for All programme, and supported by Arts Council of Wales, Metamorphosis brought together women of all ages and backgrounds to build community, understanding and support by creatively sharing their stories through art, music, poetry and writing.

The project was facilitated by six professional freelance artists working across a range of disciplines. Together, they supported participants to explore the nuanced experiences of womanhood and to reflect on the different identities, challenges and celebrations that shape women’s lives.

The celebration at Y Muni showcased a rich variety of creative work produced through the project, including poems, monologues, songs, visual collages and drawings. The display reflected both the participants’ and artists’ experiences.

Metamorphosis took place across six local arts and theatre venues: The Met in Abertillery, partnered with The Riverfront in Newport; Y Muni in Pontypridd, partnered with Cathays Community Centre in Cardiff; and Maesteg Town Hall, partnered with Elysium in Swansea.

Throughout the project, participants and facilitators reflected on growth, embodiment and lived experience through the lens of being a woman. Their work raised thoughtful questions around identity, belonging, shared burdens and celebration.

Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust, said:

“Metamorphosis was a moving and inspiring project which demonstrated the power of creativity to bring people together. Through art, music, writing and poetry, participants were able to share their stories, explore their experiences and build meaningful connections with one another.

“We were proud to support a project that celebrated women’s voices and strengthened community wellbeing, as summed up by one of our participants who said, “I made time for myself for 2 hours and wasn’t mum or wife just me”.

“We would like to thank The National Lottery Awards for All, Arts Council of Wales and our partner venues for their support. Thanks also Emily Garside, Elemchi Nwosu, Tamar Williams, Angharad Jenkins, Amruta Garud, Angharad Lee, Naseem Syed, and Krystal Lowe for their involvement.”
