How Wood-B helped create an inspiring outdoor learning space

Colleagues and trainees from Wood-B, Awen’s carpentry project for adults with learning disabilities, have been working in partnership with Bridgend College on ‘Project Malcom’, an integrated health, wellbeing and sustainability initiative led by Level 3 Sport Science learners and the college’s Additional Learning Needs student community.

The Wood-B were commissioned to handcraft the key wooden elements needed to transform an ordinary outdoor area into a vibrant space for education, dining and community connection. The work included: a bespoke communal banqueting table for students, community members and local employers to come together, share food and start new conversations; companion benches designed specifically for the area; and a preparation table to accompany a wood-fired pizza oven.

By creating furniture that was both practical and purposeful, Wood-B helped Bridgend College realise its vision of an inclusive and engaging outdoor teaching environment. The trainees worked hard throughout the project, developed practical skills and saw their efforts result in high-quality furniture that could be used and enjoyed by others.
