How our accessible and dementia-friendly singalong sessions are enhancing physical, social and mental wellbeing in Blaenau Gwent.

We are delighted to see how our monthly Golden Melodies events at the Met in Abertillery are having such a positive impact on the people who attend with their support workers and carers.
The singalong sessions, which are fully inclusive, accessible and dementia-friendly, use nostalgic music to connect people, improve cognitive function and reduce social isolation.
They support the wellbeing of older people in a warm and welcoming community-based setting, improving their quality of lives and helping them live more independently.
They also encourage movement, which can improve coordination and reduce falls, reduce loneliness, foster a sense of belonging and, above all, lift spirits.
Golden Melodies is just one of the ways Awen can play a role in preventative health care services and ultimately reduce pressure on the NHS, a key goal of The Well-being of Future Generations Act.
General Manager of the Met, Paul Selway, said:
“After the session yesterday, some of the people attending and their support workers were in tears because they enjoyed it so much. They thanked us for programming the Golden Melodies and relaxed film screenings, where they can go to events in a safe and friendly environment.”
