Young people across Bridgend County Borough have rated their local libraries overwhelmingly positive, according to the latest children’s survey carried out by Awen, highlighting the vital role libraries play in supporting reading, wellbeing and community connection.
98% of respondents, aged 7-12 years, rated their local library as “very good” or “excellent”, demonstrating the strong impact of library services across the county borough. The young people described the libraries as “a happy place”, “fun” and somewhere they feel safe, reflecting their importance beyond traditional book lending.
Other comments mentioned the reading opportunities, the calm and welcoming environment, the wide range of events, activities and resources on offer, and facilities such as computers, Lego clubs and play spaces. Many recognised the friendly and helpful library staff.
The young people reported improvements in reading confidence, opportunities to socialise with friends, and access to free activities and resources. The data also shows strong engagement in core library services, with over 75% of children borrowing books, while almost 70% attending events such as storytime and craft sessions.
The survey responses demonstrate how libraries continue to play a crucial role in children’s lives by supporting education, improving wellbeing and providing inclusive spaces for families and young people. A huge thanks to all Awen library staff who make this happen every day.
